barrow in furness
My name is Paul and I live in Barrow in Furness, Cumbria, which is a shipbuilding town on the southern fringe of the english lake district. I have been a radio amateur since October 12th 2008. I passed my foundation exam at the tender age of 51, having spent many, many years as a shortwave listener. I could not have done this without the support, knowledge and tutoring of The Furness Amateur Radio Society, of which I am a member.
My passion for radio started at an early age and I was influenced by my Father's love of radio. He was a wireless opererator/air gunner in the RAF and we would spend many hours listening to his huge, valve set. I remember listening to the fishing crews talking to each other out in the Irish Sea, the radio ham's from all over the world and thinking to myself, one day I will do that.
Equipment in the shack are a Kenwood TS-570DGE powered by a Kenwood PS-33 with a Kenwood SP-31 speaker. I use a Comet CHA-250BX2 vertical antenna which on the whole does very well on most bands. I love chasing that elusive DX on my limited 10w output and have had some great results in my short time in the hobby. I enjoy using data modes and love playing with psk31 and SSTV on the HF bands. Currently using the excellent signalink USB interface to my computer with great results so far. Software used is primarily mixW v3.0.1, MMSSTV and HRD with DM 780.
Dual band radio at home is a Yaesu FT-7900 to a Comet GP-15N tri-band Antenna. I am currently exploring IRLP on VHF and UHF and having great fun with this particular strand of the hobby. Give me a call via GB3PZ, node number 5400.
When mobile, I use a Yaesu FT-7800 dual band radio.
